Gardeners Bexley Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Bexley is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We aim to provide safe, well-planned services across our operating area and to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health through effective risk management and ongoing training.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to carry out all gardening, landscaping and maintenance work in a manner that protects people, property and the environment. Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan, deliver and review our services. Management at all levels is responsible for promoting a positive safety culture and ensuring that safe systems of work are implemented and maintained.
We will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance. We will regularly review this policy, our procedures and our performance to support continuous improvement and to reflect changes in law, best practice and the nature of our work.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Bexley rests with the company management, who will ensure that adequate resources are made available to implement this policy. Management is responsible for:
Ensuring risk assessments are carried out, documented where appropriate, and reviewed regularly. Providing suitable equipment, tools and personal protective equipment. Ensuring employees receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, and implementing corrective actions. Reviewing health and safety performance and updating policies and procedures accordingly.
All employees and workers engaged by Gardeners Bexley have a duty to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others. Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training. Use equipment, tools and protective gear correctly and report defects immediately. Report hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents and near misses without delay. Cooperate with management to enable compliance with health and safety responsibilities.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any site, suitable and proportionate risk assessments are undertaken. These consider the nature of the gardening tasks, the condition and layout of the grounds, the presence of the public, access and egress, weather conditions and any site-specific hazards. Where significant risks are identified, written method statements or safe systems of work are prepared and communicated to the team.
We plan our work to minimise risks associated with common gardening activities such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, chemical application, waste handling and the use of powered machinery. Work is organised to maintain safe distances from the public, to control vehicle and pedestrian movements where necessary and to prevent damage to property, services and utilities.
Training and Competence
Gardeners Bexley ensures that all employees are competent to perform their roles safely. This includes induction training on general health and safety procedures, site rules, emergency arrangements and the correct use of tools and equipment. Additional role-specific training is provided, for example in the use of power tools, machinery, lawn care equipment, hedge trimmers and, where applicable, pesticides or other garden chemicals.
We maintain records of training and qualifications and arrange refresher training at appropriate intervals or when new equipment, techniques or regulations are introduced. Supervisors are trained to recognise unsafe practices and to reinforce safe behaviours on site.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All machinery, tools and vehicles used by Gardeners Bexley are selected, maintained and inspected to ensure they are safe and suitable for the tasks required. Equipment is used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety guidelines. Any defective or damaged equipment is taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced.
Personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where appropriate. Employees are required to wear the protective equipment issued to them and to maintain it in good condition.
Chemical Use and Environmental Considerations
Where garden chemicals, such as weedkillers or treatments, are used, we follow the principles of safe storage, handling, application and disposal. Only trained and authorised personnel use such products, and they are always applied in line with product instructions and applicable safety guidance. We aim to minimise the use of chemicals and to consider environmentally responsible alternatives wherever practicable.
Our teams take care to prevent contamination of soil, water and surrounding areas and to protect wildlife, pets and neighbouring properties during all gardening operations.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Many gardening tasks involve manual handling, including lifting, carrying and moving soil, plants, tools and waste. Gardeners Bexley provides training in safe manual handling techniques and encourages the use of mechanical aids or team lifting whenever possible. Work is planned to reduce repetitive or excessive physical strain and to take account of weather conditions such as heat, cold or wet ground.
Public Safety and Client Premises
When working at client premises or in public spaces, we take special care to protect residents, visitors and passers-by. This may include establishing exclusion zones, placing warning signs, cordoning off work areas, controlling access and scheduling higher-risk activities for quieter times. Our staff are instructed to conduct themselves professionally and to keep sites tidy, with tools and materials stored safely to reduce tripping and other hazards.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, incidents and near misses are reported promptly to management. We investigate the underlying causes, record findings and, where necessary, update procedures, training or equipment to prevent recurrence. Lessons learned are shared with relevant staff to promote continual improvement in our safety performance.
This Health and Safety Policy reflects the commitment of Gardeners Bexley to safeguarding everyone affected by our gardening services. The policy is reviewed regularly and updated when needed to ensure it remains suitable, effective and aligned with current legal and industry standards.
